Article Ability of Cha2ds2-vasc/R2cha2ds2-vasc Scores To Predict Complications Related To Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices(Wiley, 2025) Soner, Serdar; Aktan, Adem; Aktan, Adem; Kilic, Raif; Guzel, Hamdullah; Tastan, Ercan; Oksul, Metin; Guzel, Tuncay; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBackgroundGlobally, the number of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is increasing. In our study, we aimed to investigate whether CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc and R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores are predictive of CIED-related complications. MethodsOur investigation was carried out with a multicenter retrospective design. Patients who underwent CIED surgery at two cardiac centers in Turkey between January 2011 and May 2023, 1676, were evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups according to their R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores. Patients with R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 were included in group 1 (380 patients), and patients with R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc < 5 (1296 patients) were included in group 2. The primary outcome was defined as the cumulative events. Each component of cumulative events, such as hematoma, pericardial effusion, pneumothorax, and infection, was also defined as a secondary outcome. ResultsThe study's patient population had an average age of 62.9 +/- 14 years. Pneumothorax (1.8% vs. 1.3%, p = 0.444), pericardial effusion or tamponade (0.35% vs. 0.2%, p = 0.659), and clinically significant hematoma (1.1% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.376) were comparable between the groups. Infection-related devices and cumulative events classified as primary outcomes were higher in the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 group (6.1% vs. 1.2%, p < 0.001; 7.6% vs. 3.2%, p < 0.001, respectively). Modeling analyses showed that the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score and HT were also independent predictors of device-related infection and cumulative events. ConclusionIn the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 groups, infection related to the device system and cumulative events were higher. Patients with an R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score of 5 or more and a high CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score should be evaluated more carefully regarding infection and cumulative events before and after the operation.Article Acute Cyanide Intoxication Due To Apricot Seed Ingestion(Soc Argentina Pediatria, 2024) Talay, Mehmet Nur; Orhan, Özhan; Orhan, Ozhan; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction : Cyanide poisoning, whether it be accidental or intentional, remains a significant danger to adults and children, especially in societies where agriculture is a primary source of income. We examined the clinical follow-up, complications, and results of cyanide poisoning cases that occurred after eating the pits and seeds of plants containing cyanide glycosides, such as apricot kernels and almonds. Methods : Between 01/01/2017 and 01/08/2022, 14 children aged 1-18 years who were followed up with a prediagnosis of cyanide poisoning in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were retrospectively analysed. Results : Eight of the patients followed with a preliminary diagnosis of cyanide poisoning were female and six were male. The most common admission month was July (42.8%) coinciding with the agricultural season. The most common symptoms at presentation were weakness and fatigue (n = 7). In the PICU, 4 patients presented lip cyanosis; 3, altered level of consciousness. Vomiting, seizure, headache, dizziness and palpitatons were less frequent. Four patients were treated with hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit (R) ) as an antidote due to acidosis in their blood gases. All patients treated for cyanide poisoning were discharged. Conclusions : Cyanide poisoning should be considered in paediatric patients with suspicious findings, sudden loss of consciousness, increased anion gap acidosis and lactic acidosis. The history of eating the seeds of plants such as apricot and almonds should be investigated .Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 3Antioxidant, Ache Inhibitory, and Anticancer Effects of Verbascum Thapsus Extract(C M B Assoc, 2023) Keskin, Cumali; Baran, Ayşe; Valioglu, Ferzane; Teng, Lei; Atalar, Mehmet Nuri; Keskin, Cumali; Beilerli, Aferin; Department of Medical Services and Techniques / Tıbbi Hizmetler ve Teknikleri Bölümü; 21. Vocational School of Health Services / Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiVerbascum thapsus (Mullein) is a medicinal plant used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. For this study, the biological functions of Verbascum thapsus (VT) methanol extract were determined in vitro. The plant's methanol extract was created through the maceration process. The phytochemical composition of plant extracts was investigated using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. The antioxidant capacity of the extract was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH radical) and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS radical). Cell lines Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells), LNCaP (Lymph Node Carcinoma of Prostate), and HEK293 (Human embryonic kidney 293 cells) were used to model colon, prostate, and non-cancerous cells. The cytotoxic activity of the plant extract on the proliferation of these cells was determined by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, a tetrazole) assay protocol. VT extract showed moderate DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities at 30 mg/ml concentration. With this, VT extract was determined to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and had strong cytotoxic activity on cancerous cell lines. In addition, our findings clearly showed that the plant extract had greater cytotoxic activity on the viability of cancerous cells compared to non-cancerous (Human embryonic kidney cells; HEK293) cells. The current findings showed that V. thapsus might be a promising anti-cancer medication candidate for the treatment of human colorectal adenocarcinoma and colon cancer, as well as a good source antioxidans. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction Peripheral artery disease (PAD) poses a growing clinical challenge due to an aging population, despite advances in treatment methods. Various scoring systems have emerged to predict high-risk patients, including the HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score, known for predicting prognosis in cancers and stroke. This study assesses the HALP score's relation to lesion severity and long-term mortality in PAD patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 305 symptomatic PAD patients undergoing endovascular intervention. The following formula was used to calculate the HALP score: hemoglobin (g/L) x albumin (g/L) x lymphocyte count (/L) / platelet count (/L). Lesion severity was classified by TASC-II: TASC AB and TASC CD. Mortality data were obtained from hospital and social security records. Results The study involved 305 patients (mean age 64.4 +/- 11.8 years; 72.1% male), divided into survivors (208) and non-survivors (97). ROC analysis identified HALP score as the strongest predictor of long-term mortality (AUC: 0.736; 95% CI: 0.679-0.793; p < .001). HALP score (HR, 0.087; 95% CI, 0.025-1.300; p < .001), age (p < .001), DM (p = .007), and CRP (p = .013) independently predicted mortality. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed higher HALP scores linked to lower long-term mortality (Log-rank: 20.102, p < .001), with an average follow-up of 48 +/- 18 months. Conclusion The HALP score emerged as a robust predictor of PAD prognosis, surpassing individual components and other parameters. Lower HALP scores correlated with more severe lesions and reduced life expectancy.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Assessment of renal function in obese and overweight children with ngal and kim-1 biomarkers(Nutricion Hospitalaria, 2020) Unsal, Velid; Gül, Ali; Yılmaz, Resul; Özmen, Zeliha Cansel; Demir, Osman; Gümüşer, Rüveyda; 09.03. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics/ Beslenme ve Diyetetik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiAim and background:the incidence of obesity has increased among children, and obesity has been considered an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. The normalization of these urinary markers as related to urine creatinine should be discussed.Article Attitudes of Health Sciences Students in Turkey Towards Individuals With Different Sexual Orientations(Womens Health & Action Research Centre, 2025) Bayram Değer, Vasfiye; Kacan, Havva; 09.01. Department of Nursing / Hemşirelik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiStudy was planned in a descriptive design to examine how the empathic tendencies of students in the Faculty of Health Sciences affect their attitudes toward individuals who have different sexual orientations and was conducted with seven hundred and six students. The data collected online using the Student Information Form, Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS) and Attitudes Toward Lesbian and Gay Men Scale (ATLGS). Participants' mean scores were 62.98 +/- 18.79 on the ESS and 29.02 +/- 10.75 on the ATLGS. When the correlation between ETS and ATLGS scores was analyzed, a positive and moderate (p<0.05) correlation (r = 0.62) was found between ETS and ATLGS scores. These scores were moderate and the correlation between ETS and ATLGS scores was significant (F=438.585; p<0.05). Empathic disposition explained 38.3% of the total change in ATLGS level (R2=0.383) and increased ATLGS level (B=0.620). It was found that as students' empathic skills improved, their homophobic attitudes decreased.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10Awareness of risk factors and warning signs of stroke among caregivers of patient with and not with stroke: Results from questionnaire(Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, 2019) Vural Doğru, Birgül; Karadakovan, Ayfer; Vural Doğru, Birgül; Akman, Perihan; Özel, Ebru; Bozkurt, Yücel; 09.01. Vocational School of Health Services / Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBackground Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is characterized by increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure of unknown cause. It has been suggested that the inflammatory process plays a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin, and interleukin-33 (IL-33) are among the factors involved in inflammatory processes. Objective To investigate the CSF levels of sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin, and IL-33 in patients with IIH. Methods A total of 24 IIH patients and 21 healthy controls were included in the study. Demographic characteristics of the patients and of the control group as well as CSF pressures were evaluated. Sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin and IL-33 levels in the CSF were measured. Results The CSF levels lipocalin-2, sortilin-1, autotaxin, IL-33 and CSF pressure were significantly higher in the patients group compared with the control group (p < 0.001). Decorin levels were reduced in patients (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the autotaxin and IL-33 levels and age, gender, CSF pressure, and body mass index. The results of our study showed that inflammatory activation plays an important role in the development of the pathophysiology of IIH. In addition, the fact that the markers used in our study have never been studied in the etiopathogenesis of IIH is important in explaining the molecular mechanism of this disease. Conclusion Studies are needed to evaluate the role of these cytokines in the pathophysiology of the disease. It is necessary to evaluate the effects of these molecules on this process. © 2022. Department of Midwifery/ Ebelik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiAcetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity is the most common cause of acute liver failure in worldwide. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is used as the APAP antidote. Cyclosporin A (CsA) is suppressed mitochondrial damage by binding cyclophilin, a mitochondrial pore transport component. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of NAC, CsA, and NAC+CsA treatments on APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6). 400 mg/kg/ip/single dose APAP, 1200 mg/kg/i.p/single dose NAC and 50 mg/kg/i.p/single dose CsA were performed. Light and electron microscopic alterations were investigated in liver samples. Levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and liver glutathione (GSH) were analyzed. 3-nitrotyrosine and cytochrome c immunoreactivities were evaluated in liver tissue. Here, we found that APAP leads to histopathological and ultrastructural changes in mice liver. Also, APAP increased cytochrome c and 3-nitrotyrosine immunopositive staining. Besides, a significant decrease in liver GSH and an increase in serum AST and ALT levels were detected in the APAP group. Interestingly, NAC+CsA treatment improved histological alterations, cytochrome c, and 3-nitrotyrosine immunoreactivities and liver GSH, serum AST/ALT levels caused by APAP. We suggest that the combination of NAC and CsA reduces acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.Article Comparison of Different Fixatives Effects in Histochemical Stainings of Peripheral Nerve Tissue(Cellular and Molecular Biology Association, 2024) Şeker, Uğur; Demircioğlu, M.; Şeker, U.; Demircioğlu, İ.; Department of Basic Medical Sciences / Temel Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiA pathological condition in the peripheral nerve tissue, which provides the connection between the organism and the external environment, negatively affects the standard of living. The nerve tissue histotechnology is of serious importance both for scientific studies and for clinical diagnosis. The fixation, which is one of the leading procedures for histological examination of tissues, aims to preserve tissue morphology. Another essential part of the histological examination is staining process. This study, it was aimed to determine the fixative that provides optimal histological appearance in peripheral nerve tissue. Therefore, various histochemical stainings of tissues fixed with some fixatives used in practice were compared. Sciatic nerves from each rat (n=7) used in the study were fixed with different fixatives and histochemical staining was performed. In histological examination, cellular (nucleus-cytoplasm) and intercellular morphological details, staining intensity and distribution were evaluated. At the end of the study, formaldehyde was found to be the most ideal fixing agent for all stains. Although Bouin and Carnoy fixatives differed according to the staining type, their fixation quality was similar in general. Glutaraldehyde did not give as good results as other fixatives in all stainings. This study is an important technical reference for clinical and experimental studies. © 2024 Cellular and Molecular Biology Association. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiObjective: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the in -hospital, 1 -month and 1 -year post -procedure outcomes of patients treated with Evolut-R 34 mm and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm devices. Additionally, the study aimed to identify factors that could predict the occurrence of >= mild paravalvular leaks (PVL). Methods: Between April 2015 and May 2022, 269 consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with Evolut-R 34 mm (n = 66, 24.5%) and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm (n = 203, 75.5%) devices in a single center were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Patients in the Evolut-R 34 mm group had a lower female sex ratio (16.7% vs. 66.5%, P < .001, respectively), ejection fraction (50.7 +/- 10.1% vs. 54.5 +/- 9.3%, P = .016, respectively), and mean aortic gradient (7.4 +/- 3.3 vs. 9.2 +/- 5.0, P = .026, respectively) compared to the Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm group. The groups did not exhibit any statistically significant distinctions with regard to technical success, the need for a permanent pacemaker, occurrences of stroke, major vascular complications, PVL, major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, or mortality. Peak velocity was confirmed as a significant pre- dictor of >= mild PVL in both patient groups in the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. In logistic regression analysis; In patients with Evolut-R 34 mm valve, pre-TAVI aortic valve peak velocity (odds ratio (OR) = 23.202; P = .019) and calcium volume 800 Hounsfield Units (mm(3)) (OR = 1.017; P < .001) were independent predictors of >= mild PVL. Conclusion: The Evolut-R 34 mm valve has shown comparable in -hospital results with smaller valve sizes. Pre-TAVI aortic valve peak velocity and calcium volume predicted >= mild PVL in Evolut-R 34 mm patients.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8Comparison of Pain Levels of Traditional Radial, Distal Radial, and Transfemoral Coronary Catheterization(Assoc Medica Brasileira, 2023) Günlü, Serhat; Kılıç, Raif; Kilic, Raif; Guzel, Tuncay; Aktan, Adem; Aktan, Adem; Arslan, Bayram; Karahan, Mehmet Zülkif; Aslan, Muzaffer; Gunlu, Serhat; Karahan, Mehmet Zulkuf; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of aortic angulation (AA) on periprocedural and in -hospital complications as well as mortality of patients undergoing Evolut (TM) R valve implantation. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 264 patients who underwent transfemoral-approach transcatheter aortic valve replacement with self-expandable valve at our hospital between August 2015 and August 2022. These patients underwent multislice computer tomography scans to evaluate AA. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement endpoints, device success, and clinical events were assessed according to the definitions provided by the Valve Academic Research Consortium -3. Cumulative events included paravalvular leak, permanent pacemaker implantation, new-onset stroke, and in -hospital mortality. Patients were divided into two groups, AA <= 48(degrees) and AA > 48(degrees), based on the mean AA measurement (48.3 +/- 8.8) on multislice computer tomography. Results: Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of cumulative events, utilizing variables with a P-value < 0.2 obtained from univariable logistic regression analysis, including AA, age, hypertension, chronic renal failure, and heart failure. AA (odds ratio [OR]: 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.89-3.38, P=0.104), age (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.99-1.10, P=0.099), hypertension (OR: 1.66, 95% CI: 0.82-3.33, P=0.155), chronic renal failure (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 0.92-3.61, P=0.084), and heart failure (OR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.27-1.21, P=0.145) were not found to be significantly associated with cumulative events in the multivariable logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that increased AA does not have a significant impact on intraprocedural and periprocedural complications of patients with new generation self-expandable valves implanted.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Effect of Auricular Acupressure in Management of Constipation in Palliative Care Patients(Sage Journals Home, 2023) Bıçak Ayık, Derya; Can, Gülbeyaz; 09.02. Results The average age of the patients was 62.3 +/- 10.6 years and 43.7% were female. In-hospital and 1-year mortality were found to be significantly higher in the group with low HALP scores (6.0 vs. 2.1%, P = 0.019 and 22.5 vs. 9.9%, P < 0.001, respectively). In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, a cutoff level of 34.6 of the HALP score predicted 1-year mortality with 71% sensitivity and 65% specificity (area under the curve: 0.707, 95% confidence interval: 0.651-0.762, P < 0.001). In Kaplan-Meier analysis, higher mortality rates were observed over time in the group with lower HALP scores (log-rank test=16.767, P < 0.001). In Cox regression analysis, the HALP score was found to be an independent predictor of 1-year mortality (odds ratio: 0.969, 95% confidence interval: 0.958-0.981, P < 0.001). Conclusion We found that a low HALP score could predict in-hospital and 1-year mortality in patients admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of NSTEMI.Article Effects of ketamine on penile tissues in an experimental priapism model in rats(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2024) Unsal, Velid; Balta, Mehtap Gurler; Tapar, Hakan; Karaman, Tugba; Karaman, Serkan; Unsal, Velid; Firat, Fatih; 09.03. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics/ Beslenme ve Diyetetik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological and biochemical effects of ketamine on penile tissues following ischemia-reper fusion injury induced by priapism. METHODS: Twenty-four male rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control group. Group 2 underwent the priapism model to induce ischemia-reperfusion injury. Group 3, the treatment group, experienced a similar ischemia-reper fusion model as Group 2; additionally, 50 mg/kg of ketamine was administered intraperitoneally just before reperfusion. Blood biochemical analyses and penile histopathological evaluations were performed. RESULTS: In Group 3, significant improvements were observed in all histopathological scores, including desquamation, edema, inflammation, and vasocongestion compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). Blood biochemical analyses showed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were recorded as 10 in Group 2, with a significant decrease in Group 3 (p=0.013). Similarly, proinflammatory cytokine levels, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), were found to be suppressed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.003, p=0.022, and p=0.028, respectively). Antioxidant enzyme activities, such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were higher in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.016 and p=0.024, respectively). CONCLUSION: Ketamine is an effective anesthetic agent in alleviating the effects of penile ischemia-reper fusion injury.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Effects of Maternal Body Weight on Iodine Concentration in Breast Milk and Cord Blood and Infant Growth(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Savaş, Hasan Basri; Savaş, H.B.; Erdem, D.; Yabancl Ayhan, N.; Department of Basic Medical Sciences / Temel Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBreast milk (BM) is the only source of iodine and bioactive compounds that influence growth and development in infants. The content of BM may be influenced by maternal body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal weight on BM and cord blood iodine concentrations, growth-related hormones, infant anthropometric measurements. A total of 84 mother-infant pairs participated. Levels of leptin, adiponectin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in postnatal BM and cord blood were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), iodine by Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. Dietary iodine intake of women was determined by food frequency questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements of infants at birth and 3 months were evaluated. Dietary iodine intake was found to be similar in normal weight (NW) and overweight/obese (OW/OB) women (p > 0.05). Breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC) was 17.4 g in NW, 18.2 g in OB/OW women. Adiponectin in cord blood and IGF-I in BM were higher OB/OW than NW women (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were found between the infant birth weight and adiponectin in BM, between the infant body weight at 3 months and leptin and adiponectin in BM, between the infant birth head circumference and IGF-I in BM (p < 0.05). In multiple linear regression model, leptin and adiponectin in BM had a positive effect on infant body weight (p < 0.05). Maternal BMI may influence infant body weight via leptin and adiponectin in BM and infant head circumference via IGF-I. No relationship was found between maternal BMI and iodine levels and anthropometric measurements of the infant. Longitudinal studies are recommended to understand the effect of BMIC on growth. © The Author(s), 2025.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Etomidate Alleviates Ovarian Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rats(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2024) Unsal, Velid; Balta, Mehtap Gurler; Tapar, Hakan; Karaman, Tugba; Karaman, Serkan; Unsal, Velid; Katar, Muzaffer; 09.03. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics/ Beslenme ve Diyetetik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBACKGROUND: This study investigates the protective effects of etomidate against oxidative damage in an experimental model of ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS: A total of 24 female rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control. Group 2 underwent an ovarian torsion/detorsion procedure. Group 3 underwent similar procedures as Group 2; additionally, 4 mg/kg of etomidate was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes before ovarian detorsion. Blood samples were analyzed for lipid peroxidation, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and antioxidant enzyme activity RESULTS: Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 Beta (IL1 beta ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor -alpha (TNF- alpha ), in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.005, p=0.016, and p<0.001, respectively). Additionally, a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). In contrast, activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), were significantly increased in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.031 and p=0.001, respectively). Furthermore, Group 3 demonstrated notable reductions in histopathological scores for follicular degeneration, vascular occlusion, bleeding, and inflammation compared to Group 2 (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Etomidate alleviates ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat ovarian torsion-detorsion model by improving both histopathological and biochemical outcomes.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Evaluation of Breastfeeding Behaviors and Complementary Feeding Practices of Turkish and Syrian Refugee Mothers(Sociedad Argentina de Pediatria, 2024) Orhan, Ö.; Orhan, Özhan; Elçi, H.; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiObjectives: The purpose of this study was to compare breastfeeding and related factors (age, level of education, age at first pregnancy, etc.), and complementary feeding practices between Syrian refugee and native Turkish mothers. Material and methods: This descriptive-comparative study examined the nutritional characteristics of infants aged 9 to 60 months whose mothers were Turkish or Syrian refugees who attended Kızıltepe State Hospital between January 2022 and July 2022. Results: 204 mothers (126 Turkish and 78 Syrian) who had a child aged 9-60 months were included. The average age of the mothers was 27.60 ± 5.17 years for Turkish citizens and 28.91 ± 5.62 for Syrian refugees, without significant difference between the two groups (p: 0.091). Postpartum breastfeeding was 91.3% and breastfeeding duration was 12 (0-24) months in Turkish citizens; in Syrian refugees, breastfeeding was 84.6% and average breastfeeding time was 9 (0- 24) months (respectively, breast milk intake p: 0.144, uptake time p: 0.161; no statistical difference). Breastfeeding training was received by 23.8% of Turkish citizens and 5.1% of Syrian refugees; there was a significant difference between the two groups (p: 0.001). Conclusion: Inrefugee groups, infant and maternal nutrition practices are disrupted. Working in conjunction with local and international organizations and state agencies that give help to refugee groups, the appropriate interventions, initiatives, supports, and awareness-raising activities would strive to improve practices in mother and baby nutrition and narrow gaps. © 2024 Sociedad Argentina de Pediatria.
